However, there are some very basic guidelines to applying mineral makeup that will work with almost any brand you buy. Of course, it's always preferable that you develop your own personal style- your own touch. You know how you like your makeup to look, so practice, practice, practice until you get your application method how you like it. After all, it is your face.

Applying Foundation/ Finishing Powder

Foundation is admittedly the hardest to apply. You see some brands that say "swirl, tap, buff" and other brands that say "don't!" What are you supposed to do?

The general rule of thumb is that if a mineral makeup contains bismuth oxychloride, you'll likely have to buff it in, and buff it in well, for the makeup to look its best. Generally a kabuki brush is used with this technique.

What's A Kabuki?

Good question! It's a very densely packed brush. It gives very heavy coverage because so much more makeup is left on the bristles after you tap. It's a good option for people who want a more opaque look or need heavier coverage. Usually with a kabuki you must buff the minerals into your skin, or else you'll look streaky, emphasize your pores, etc.

Buffing techniques, usually with a kabuki, are known to irritate sensitive skin. Even women without sensitive skin have problems with irritation. Remember, it's "swirl, tap, buff."

Fluffy Brushes

Using a fluffy face brush is the other popular way to apply mineral makeup. Better quality makeup is more pigmented, so using a kabuki is out of the question for most women. But a nice fluffy brush is just the ticket since a little makeup goes a long way. Whether you choose synthetic or animal hair brushes is up to you. Both can be equally good, depending on the quality. The same basic rules apply as with the kabuki- swirl your brush in the makeup, tap off the excess and the brush in a downward motion over your face. No need to buff. Applying Foundation Wet

Wet? Yup. There are some gals who prefer the finish when mineral makeup is applied wet. There are a couple of ways to do it.

With A Brush- Mix your foundation and some water/moisturizer/lotion, etc. until a creamy consistency. Then dip your brush in it and apply in a downward motion. It will dry to a soft powder.

With A Puff/Sponge- You can either dampen your puff or sponge and dip it into your foundation and apply in a downward motion or mix the foundation with water/moisturizer/lotion and apply with a sponge. It will dry to a soft powder.

Finally, you can apply your foundation dry, then mist with a hydrosol or something similar and either use a brush or a sponge to smooth the moisture into the powder. Be sure to use a downward motion. Some gals even like to layer their makeup this way. Powder, mist, smooth. Powder, mist, smooth.

Why The Downward Motion?

Good question. Your pores and facial fuzz lay that way naturally. When you smooth your makeup that direction it makes a more "natural" look.

Other Facial Applications

For your other color cosmetics applied to face, here are the general outlines.

Concealor- Using a taklon concealor brush or an all-over eyeshadow brush, dip it into the concealor or foundation you're using, tap off most of the excess and apply directly to the area you want to conceal. Blend very, very well. If you're using an all over concealor, complexion enhancer, finishing powder, etc. use a fluffy face brush and swirl, tap and brush lightly in a downward motion.

Blush- Swirl, tap, brush in a slight curve from the apple of your cheek to your hairline. A nice fluffy blush brush works best.

Eyeshadow/ Eyeliner Application

This is the really fun stuff. You can apply mineral makeup wet or dry. Applying it wet is called "foiling" and makes the colors more bold and can even change them slightly in some cases.

For regular application, simply dip your brush into the color, tap off the excess and apply like you normally would.

For foiling, mix some minerals with water, hydrosol, eye primer, etc. until a creamy consistency. Then apply as you normally would. When dry you can buff with a dry brush to blend (but this may cause some of the mica to come away).

The foiling method works very well for eye lining. Colors that might be too bold to wear on your eye make great liner colors. Foiling them will help them last longer and show up better.

- Mask takes anywhere from 20 - 30 minutes to dry. You feel your skin tightened when the mask is dry. Splash water all over face and gently remove the mask with light massage strokes on your face. Continue doing this till your face is cleared of the entire home made facial mask. Let your face air dry.

Use this home made facial mask once or twice a week or depending up on the time you have on hand. You will feel fresh and have much younger looking face all the time.

If you have blemishes a mask containing a ripe tomato, one tablespoon of rolled oats and one tablespoon of lemon juice may well be for you. Blend everything together and apply it to your skin. You have to make sure that the mixture is thick enough to cling onto blemished areas. Leave the mixture on for around ten minutes and then scrub it all off.

Foundations in the form of blushes and powders highlight and add color to the skin. According to FDA regulations, ingredients must be listed in order from largest to smallest amounts used -- unless the quantity of the ingredient is 1% or less, in which case, the ingredients may be listed in any order.

Let's use jojoba oil as an example. This is a great moisturizer in the right quantity. How much jojoba oil is used in a particular product? It is not enough to have the "right" ingredients, they must be used in amounts that really work. If you see jojoba oil near the end of the list of ingredients, chances are that only a tiny amount was used, and it was for labeling purposes only.

If you are buying online, check the company's website for ingredients lists of their products. The companies that sell truly natural products will be comfortable publishing their lists of ingredients. Don't be shocked if there is a flowery description of how wonderful the product is, followed by the word "contains," and just a few of the (natural, of course!) ingredients contained.

One reason why all of a skin product's ingredients should be listed on websites and labels is that so many people today have allergies. It is not enough for cosmetics to be "hypoallergenic." Many people have allergies to ingredients that are totally natural, such as honey or beeswax. Being open about their products' ingredients is just another way a company can show that it truly cares about its customers.

In order to choose the right product, you should know what to pay attention to when you read the label. Some companies do not obey the FDA's labeling rules, but instead, add descriptions that they think will entice you to buy their products.

A few examples of misleading terms used on labels:

"Sodium Laureth Sulfate (coconut derived)." Sodium Laureth Sulfate is a harsh detergent that should not be used in natural products even though it is derived from coconut. Some manufacturers want you to think that because of the term "coconut derived," the ingredient is natural. It is not.

Another example: Many products contain the description: "Infusion of organic herbs," followed by a long list of botanicals. The assumption is that the more herbs used, the more health benefits. Don't count on it. If you add a bag of peppermint tea to a cup of hot water, you will make an infusion. If you add the same bag of peppermint tea to a gallon of hot water, or to 5 gallons of hot water, technically it will still be an infusion, but you won't benefit from it. The problem is the words "herbal infusion," mean nothing unless you know how concentrated the infusion is. As I pointed out before, it is not enough to use the right ingredients; they must be used in the right amounts if they are to benefit us.

One more point: In studies, parabens have been linked to breast cancer, so many women avoid cosmetics that contain them. Sometimes labels will try to reassure you by saying: "This product contains less than 0.25% parabens." Though this amount seems small, you should still be concerned. The real problem with parabens is not with the amount used, but with the fact that these chemicals can penetrate the skin and accumulate in the body's tissue. This can be especially risky if you use several of these products on your skin, each one containing a small amount of parabens!

It's beyond the scope of a short article to provide every example of mislabeling, but hopefully this will inspire you to be more vigilant when purchasing cosmetics.

" Pure glycerin hand soap

You can pat your face with a clean hot face towel to bring circulation to your face and to help open and move the toxic material, in the pimple, to the surface. Do not scrub hard to burst a pimple but just scrub lightly to burst a pimple when it is ready to open.

Use the hot towel application only 2-3 times per week.

When a pimple is open do not continue to rub or scrub it. In fact do not pick or scratch an open pimple since this could create other sores or leave scars that are difficult to remove. Just washing your face with clean soap will keep your face free of toxic matter.

Whatever you put on your skin will move into your skin and into your bloodstream.

Most commercial creams, lotions, and soaps are filled with all kinds of chemicals that are toxic to your body. By using them you are making your liver work harder.
