The goal of face lift surgery is to correct laxity on the lower half of the face. In patients who have significant aging changes on the neck, liposuction and/or neck muscle tightening (necklift) should also be done with the face lift to achieve optimal results. Patients usually start having face lifts in their late forties. Before and after face lift photos
Procedure Description
The face and neck lift are usually performed together, although in certain instances they may be performed independently. The incision is placed in front of the ear and follows the back curve of the ear before extending into the hair. The loose muscle layer under the skin is tightened, and the excess skin is trimmed. The neck lift involves liposuction to remove excess fat, and tightening of the midline neck muscle (platysmaplasty) to correct the bands that occur with aging. Sutures are removed in about one week. The surgery is done on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia with intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. Swelling and bruising goes away in about one week and most patients have minimal discomfort.
Additional Information
The key to successful face/neck lift surgery is to tighten the underlying tissues with a vertical pull and to not remove too much skin. Most unnatural looking facelifts stem from excessive skin removal, resulting in a “wind-swept” look as seen in some actors. Dr. Lo has performed hundreds of facelifts and his patients comment on how natural looking the results are.
Concurrent Procedures
The face lift is commonly performed with a brow lift, midface lift, or eyelid lift.
